Hair as Devotion, Not Transaction

There is a word the temple priests use for what happens when a woman lays her hair on the marble steps at Tirumala. It is not a word for sale, or surrender, or sacrifice. It is केशदान — hair-gift.

For two thousand years that gift has funded hospitals, midday meals, the rebuilding of gopurams. It has been counted in tonnes, audited at quarterly auctions, and shipped — too often — to factories that strip it of the very thing that made it worth gathering.

We took a different turn. We collected what was given in faith and brought it, intact, to artisans in Hyderabad. No acid bath. No silicone wrap. No anonymous blend.

When something is given in devotion, the least we can do is to leave it as it was given.
